James Young is a seasoned aviation professional whose career spans decades of flight, maintenance, instruction, commercial operations, and military service. Currently serving as Assistant Chief Flight Instructor at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Florida, James oversees a team of Certified Flight instructors and supports flight students, blending rigorous standards with mentorship and operational excellence while also teaching tomorrows future in aviation.
His flight credentials include Airline Transport Pilot (AMEL), Commercial Pilot ratings across multiple categories—including SEL, SES, and Glider—and a Gold Seal Certified Flight Instructor designation (CFI, CFII, MEI). With extensive experience in turbine, multi-engine, and seaplane operations, James brings unmatched technical depth to every cockpit and classroom.
Before joining Embry-Riddle, James flew as a Captain for Wheels Up Private Jets, piloting the Hawker 400XP across the U.S. with a focus on safety, precision, and client service. His earlier roles included ferrying aircraft across North America and specializing in seaplane operations, he also trained new aircraft owners in advanced aircraft, and test flew aircraft to include cutting-edge electric aircraft—demonstrating his adaptability and forward-thinking approach to aviation technology.
James also served honorably in the U.S. Air Force for two decades, where he held roles ranging from Flying Crew Chief Instructor and Manager, Quality Assurance Inspector, and Electronic Warfare Technician. His military background instilled a commitment to discipline, accountability, and continuous improvement—values he carries into every aspect of his civilian aviation career. It also paved the way for his maintenance and aircraft systems expertise, culminating in his Airframe & Powerplant Mechanic certification with Inspection Authority.
Academically, James holds two Masters Degrees in Aviation Security and Aviation Operations Management, a Bachelor of Science in Aeronautics, and dual Associate Degrees in Avionics Technology and Human Resources.
